From the budget to the venue: all the latest updates from the press conference!

Today the EBU and RTP, the Portuguese national broadcaster hold a press conference in order to reveal the latest developements for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2018. It has been announced that the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 will be held at the 8th, 10th and 12th of May in Lisbon (read more here).

The RTP President announced regarding finance that: “Lisbon Council and Lisbon tourism will pay for almost every event on the city and will pay the venue. Tourism of Portugal will also help. RTP will organize the televised contest.” He also revealed that there will be Eurovision events located near the sea for the spectators who will come to Lisbon for Eurovision. He continued: “Content and Production themes will now work on the shows model. RTP is not worried about hosting Eurovision, we are excited!” RTP President also revealed that Lisbon offers the MEO arena, which will be the venue for next years competition! The MEO arena has a capacity for 20.000 people and is one of the most important locations for international singers like Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé and Shakira. The MEO arena is one of the largest indoor arenas in the European Union and the largest in Portugal.

 

 

 

The EBU director was happy about Salvador Sobral and Portugal winning the competition not only because of the good work he believes between the RTP and the EBU but also because the song. He revealed that the preperations are ahead of schedule and RTP has a strong team. The EBU director also reveals Lisbon as an important city for hosting as it offers much for the culture and music.

The budget for the shows will be revealed in December, according to the RTP director.

The Lisbon Council President Fernando Medina stated that: “Portugal won a responsibility. We couldn’t miss that responsibility. We needed to do it and do it well. And opportunity for development. The Tourism taxation will be the one paying for most of the things.”
